Akwa ibom state House of Assembly swears in new Chief judge

Justice Godwin Jack Abraham was recently
sworn-in as the state acting chief judge by
the state governor, Udom Emmanuel in
accordance with the provisions of the 1999
constitution as amended. He succeeds
Justice Stephen Okon who retired after the
mandatory stipulation of the law on tenure of
judges in the country.
Justice Abraham has been described by
lawyers, and other persons that have had
one or more dealings with as a fearless,
courageous and fair judge, who wouldn’t
blink his eyes in the face of any act of
injustice against anybody no matter how
lowly placed in the society. His elevation to
the position of acting chief judge was well
received by members of the public. He’s
bringing his wealth of experience and vigour
into office. He will need to sustain public
confidence in the judiciary by ensuring
expeditious treatment of cases. With him on
the saddle, it’s expected that the era of
unnecessary adjournments of cases by
judges was coming to an end. The bench,
the bar and the public believe that he’s
coming to head the judiciary with a sense of
responsibility and with the fear of God.
He’s has already set out his area of focus,
which is, “work assiduously to sustain public
confidence in the judiciary by ensuring
speedy dispensation of justice, stressing that
workers welfare would receive priority
attention”.
Born in June 1956, Justice Abraham is an
indigene of Ediene Ikot Ebom, Ekparakwa
Clan in Oruk Anam Local Government Area.
A 1984 graduate of University of Calabar,
and was called to the Bar in 1985, and
appointed magistrate in the Akwa Ibom state
judiciary in 1987. He has been serving as a
High Court Judge for more than a decade
until his appointment as acting chief judge of
the state.
Justice Abraham is a fellow of the Nigerian
Institute of Chartered Arbitrators’, Fellow
Institute of Mediators and Conciliators, and
an Alumnus of Law Institute, Washington DC
USA.
He has served as member, Election Petitions’
Tribunal in Abia, Anambra, Niger and Kebbi
States. His guiding conviction in the
discharge of his responsibility as widely
known by those who have attended his court
room reflects boldly: “Fear God, the ultimate
Judge”.
The acting chief judge is an ordained
minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of
God, Regional Coordinator, Intercessors for
Nigeria, President, Menswatch Prayer
Ministry and Member Jerusalem House of
Prayer for All Nations.
He is married to Dr. (Mrs.) Emem Abraham
and the marriage is blessed with six children
